Label Genie — Privacy & Data Protection
Last updated: 2026-07-28
Label Genie designs product labels and prints them from Shopify admin. This policy describes exactly what data the app processes, why, and how it is protected.
What we process, and why
| Data | Source | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Label designs and their version history | Created by you in the editor | Storing your templates, and letting you restore an earlier version |
| Artwork you upload (logos, certification marks) | Uploaded by you | Placing images on labels, and caching a print-ready rendition of each |
| Label stock definitions and printer alignment offsets | Set by you when adding stock or calibrating | Rendering a label at the right size and position |
| Barcode format settings | Set by you | Encoding barcodes to your store's own digit convention |
| Print-job records (which template version, which printer, status, timestamps) | Created when you print | Showing print history, diagnosing failed jobs, and metering your plan |
| Printer and computer names and online status | Your printing account | Showing which printers are online and routing jobs to them |
| Usage counts (labels per month) | Derived from print jobs | Enforcing your plan's allowance |
What we deliberately do not collect
- No customer data at all. The app does not request order, customer, or checkout access. It cannot see names, emails, addresses, or payment information — no scope is granted that would allow it.
- No copy of your catalog. Product details are read from Shopify at the moment you preview or print a label and are used to render it. We do not keep a product database of our own, so there is nothing of your catalog left behind afterwards.
- No copy of the finished label. A print job records which design and printer were used and whether it succeeded. The rendered label itself is sent to the printer and not retained by us.
- No payment or card data. No browsing or behavioural tracking. No marketing profiles.
- Job titles sent to the printing service are non-identifying by rule (a short job reference, never a customer’s details).
- Free-text you type onto a label is stored as part of the design, and must not hold personal data. A label can carry your own custom text. Whatever you type is saved with the template. Do not use it for customer names, phone numbers, or anything else identifying — the app has no way to recognise personal data entered this way, so it cannot include it in a deletion request answered on a customer’s behalf.
Data minimisation and use limitation
We process the minimum needed for the features above and use it for nothing else. Data is never sold, rented, shared for advertising, or used for automated decision-making about people.
Where data is processed
Label Genie is operated from the United States, and data is stored and processed there. If you are in the EEA or UK, this means your data is transferred outside your region; we rely on standard contractual clauses for that transfer, and the details are set out in our Data Processing Addendum.
Storage, security, and retention
- All data is transmitted over TLS (HTTPS), in transit to us and onward.
- Data is encrypted at rest and isolated per shop.
- Printing-account credentials are encrypted using industry-standard authenticated encryption. Access tokens and secrets are never written to logs.
- Designs and artwork are kept for as long as the app is installed, because they are your work. Version history keeps the most recent thirty versions of each design, plus any version a print job used, so the record of what was printed stays intact.
- Detailed print-job progress is pruned after 90 days, and completed job records after one year. Monthly usage counts are kept while the app is installed, to enforce your plan’s allowance.
We describe our security controls in terms of what they protect rather than how they are built. Merchants who need implementation detail for a security review can request it — we would rather answer a named merchant than publish a blueprint.
Uninstalling, and deletion
Uninstalling does not immediately delete your designs. It stops the app acting on your behalf: open print jobs are cancelled, our access to your store ends, and our access to your printing account is revoked so this app stops being billed for it. The printing account itself stays yours, untouched. Your templates and artwork are kept for a short window so that uninstalling and reinstalling — the most common troubleshooting step there is — does not destroy your work.
Shopify then sends a redaction request about 48 hours later, and at that point everything belonging to your store is erased: designs, version history, artwork, label stock, calibration, print history, settings, usage counts, and printing credentials. If you would like your data erased sooner than that, contact us and we will do it.
Service providers
We use a small number of service providers to run Label Genie — to host the application, store its data, and deliver print jobs to your printer. They process data only to provide those services to us, under contract, and never for their own purposes. If you need the specific providers named — for a security review, or for your own privacy notice — contact us and we will tell you.
PrintNode is named rather than left to a category, because you hold that account yourself and sign into it. It is the service that carries a print job from us to the printer on your counter. It receives the label to be printed and your printer’s details; it does not receive your catalog or your designs.
Companion apps
Label Genie is one of three apps by the same developer, and they are designed to work together. Each works on its own, and Label Genie needs neither of the others.
- Scale Genie prints labels for goods sold by weight. If you have both apps and you ask Scale Genie to import a design, it reads that design and its artwork from Label Genie and takes its own copy. Nothing moves unless you request the import, only your own store ’s designs are ever readable, and the access is read-only — Scale Genie cannot change or delete anything in Label Genie.
- Barcode Genie decodes price-embedded barcodes at Shopify POS. The two apps exchange no data at all — Barcode Genie simply scans a printed barcode, exactly as any price-embedded scanner would.
Your rights and controls
- You can delete any design, version, or piece of artwork from inside the app at any time.
- We honour Shopify’s mandatory privacy webhooks (
customers/data_request,customers/redact,shop/redact). Because the app holds no customer data, the customer requests are answered with confirmation that none is held;shop/redactperforms a full deletion of your store’s data. - To request information or deletion outside those flows, contact support below.
